Installing HP printer and plotter drivers

There are several printers and plotters available in the department for use by users attached to the department network. A list of these is provided below:

• ps2 - HP 4MV in ES207. This printer can handle page sizes of 8.5x11, 8.5x14 and 11x14
• ps5 - Apple Laserwriter II NTX in ES517 (grad PC lab)
• dj750 - HP DesignJet 750/C in ES207. This is a large format plotter for colour output up to 36" wide
• cr218 - HP 4M+ in ES218. One of the CREWES printers
• cr218c - HP 1200C colour plotter in ES218. CREWES
• cr 206 - HP 5 in ES206. CREWES printer
• cr054 - Apple Laserwriter II NTX in ES54. CREWES
• frplaser - HP 4M+ in ES242. FRP printer
• ps249 - HP 4 in ES249. Hydrogeology printer
• ps250 - HP 4 in ES250. Terry Gordon's printer

There are drivers for all these printers and plotters available on the release disks for Windows95 and Windows3.1.

However, the latest release of the dirvers from HP and ADOBE for the HP printers and plotters are maintained on the department server in two locations:

1. If you have Windows95 network running use the Network Neighborhood icon. If tuba is not on the list shown when this is opened, then open Entire Network followed by Dept. Then open tuba followed by glgplib.
2. Use anonymous ftp to access tuba, then cd pub/drivers

The drivers are under hp_plotter and hp_printer.

Plotters

There are two types of drivers available for the HP DesignJet 750 plotter - HPGL and PostScript. Sometimes one of these works better than the other with certain applications. The HPGL driver processes the image on the local PC while the PS driver processes the image on the plotter itself. If you have a fast system with lots of memory / disk space, the HPGL driver will probably be faster. You may need to try both.

Installation:

Open the directory with the required file (dj750_ps or dj750_hpgl). Copy the file into the temp directory on the local PC. This is a self extracting compressed archive.

Run the expansion by double clicking on the icon.

Now open the printers control panel.

For Win95 click Add Printer. Follow the wizard with the following steps:

• network printer
• no (print from MS DOS) then browse button
• expand tuba
• click on dj750 then OK
• Have Disk button
• Enter: c:\temp then OK
• If installing the HPGL driver select the first entry on the list (C3196A in brackets)
• If installing the PS driver select 750C/PS
• Replace existing driver (if a driver is already installed)
• No (don't print a test page)
• Finish

When the new icon appears in the printers window, rename it to dj750ps or dj750hpgl

For Windows3.11 running Trumpet you will need to set up the spooler with a file capture port. Install the printer using the Have Disk option and enter c:\temp. Connect the driver to the file capture port.

For Windows3.11 running MS TCP/IP install the plotter as above, but use the network option for Connect and enter \\tuba\dj750 in the second field in the window that appears. You cannot browse for plotters as there is a bug in the software. The first (top) field has a pull down menu - select LPT3: in this field. This causes LPT3: to appear in the printer list alongside the printer name, but this is redirected to the remote plotter.

Printers

Drivers for the Apple Laserwriter printers are loaded from the Windows release disks. For the HP printers, there are updated drivers available under the hp_printer directory. There are several options: the drivers from HP or the Adobe postscript drivers version 3 for Windows3.1 and version 4.1 for Windows95.

For the HP release:

• Copy the file mp211en.exe to \temp on the local machine.
• Expand by opening a DOS window and entering the command: mp211en -d
• Run setup from the expanded files

For the Adobe releases, use 3 for Windows3.11 and 4.1 for Windows95. Install as above.
