Earthquake Storms (Discovery) – 60 min

The only thing more terrifying than a major earthquake is a whole string of them – only a few miles apart, each as powerful as the next. These aren't mere aftershocks; they're earthquake storms. And they can bring an entire nation to its knees.

Follow leading plate tectonics experts as they develop this revolutionary theory – then test it in America's earthquake heartland, California. Two massive quakes – just hours apart – seem to bear out the veracity of the theory, so scientists begin scouring the globe for the next storm center. It's a search that leads them to the city of Istanbul – and all four million of its inhabitants.

As historians piece together the turbulent tectonic history of Turkey, a frightening pattern begins to emerge – one that places the highly dense city directly in the path of an oncoming earthquake storm. Watch as experts race against the geological clock to prepare the city for potential disaster and stave off what could be the most devastating earthquake we've ever seen.
